Step 1

First, simply select the bit of text you want to underline either by double clicking (if it is merely one word of text), or right clicking and dragging the mouse mouse from right to left / left to right (if the text that you want to underline consists of more than one word). Once selected, the background color of chosen text will change, while the unselected text will remain with a white background. See the below image.

Step 2

Next, click the ‘Down Arrow’ from the menu. The ‘Down Arrow’ is located right next to the ‘Link’ icon. Doing this will display a new Dropdown menu with additional Block Tools such as ‘Highlight‘, ‘Justify’, ‘Strikethrough‘, and more.

Step 3

Lastly, scroll and click on the ‘Underline’ option in the Dropdown menu. Doing this will instantly underline the selected text. See the image of the final result below.

Why You May Want to Avoid Underling text in WordPress

While it might be tempting to underline and justify text on a your website, you should consider not doing so for a few reasons. This is because underlined text can at times look like internal or external links, leading to confusion on your website when readers try to click expecting to be redirected to other pages. One of the major reasons why this misinterpretation might happen is because most external URL links, when placed in PDF and Microsoft Word documents, are automatically underlined.
