Here’s the Scoop on This is My Black
This Is My Black is a powerful and uplifting book that speaks to the heart of anyone who has ever felt marginalized or different. Written by Bishop Marcia Dinkins, this book was inspired by her own granddaughter Aubree’s struggles with being teased, bullied, mocked and ridiculed for her light skin and blonde hair or as some would call it Albinism. In the face of such cruelty, Dinkins wanted to share a message of hope and empowerment that would help Aubree see the beauty within herself.
Dinkins uses powerful metaphors to illustrate the beauty of uniqueness. This is My Black is the self-defining moment for Aubree as she discovers herself in so many beautiful things such as pearls, the sunshine, the powerful things like the Lion and the beauty of diversity within her family. Aubree learns to see herself in all things while also telling and showing others that “you too can appreciate and love the Beautiful Hue of YOU!!!
Perhaps most importantly, This Is My Black reminds us that our differences are what make us beautiful. Whether we have light skin or dark, curly hair or straight, we all have something special to offer the world. By embracing our individuality and celebrating our diversity, we can learn to see the beauty in ourselves and others.
